Alarm Systems : Making The Best Choice

by Edson Buchanan

Many people are considering installing alarm systems to protect their property. This is an investment in the safety of your home. Hard wired and wireless are the two basic kinds of alarm systems. There are advantages and disadvantages to both kinds, depending on your situation. There are many different features to both.

It is easiest to install a wired system in a house when the house is being built. This is because many wires need to be run through the walls. Not only is this expensive but it is also difficult to do after the house is built. Ultimately, an efficient wired system requires a lot of time and planning. The outcome, however, is a more effective hidden system than many wireless systems.

No major interior planning or modifications is required to install a wireless security system. This is partly because of the newer technology used and also due to the fact that a wireless system does not require as much maintenance as a wired system. Nevertheless, the reception of a wireless system from the camera to the base station, could be spotty or inadequate - depending upon the interference from radio transmitters in the vicinity, the house layout as also the distance of the camera from the base station. But finally, a wired system guarantees the best transmittance of images / video feeds to the base station.

In addition, even though wireless system installation is cheaper and requires less time, buying the system itself is generally more costly than purchasing a wired system. There is less component maintenance with a wireless system, but poor reception may force the owner to continually have to move or retune the components. However, you may find this preferable to the more complicated, maintenance prone wired systems which require you to install costly new wiring in order to run them.

The camera's video feed can be watched in real time, recorded so that you can view it later, or both, regardless of whether it is wireless or wired. You may also use motion detection software which will immediately tell the owner if there is an intrusion. Motion detection and video feed can be sent from the base station to a secure website, making it easy for the owner to check on her property while she is away. You may also employ alarm companies to track notification of intrusion for you. If there is an intrusion, they can summon the authorities.

There are a mind-boggling variety of alarm systems available in the market, which can be basically classified into wired or wireless, with options available in each category. Making a choice gets even more complicated with the wide range of features offered, the methods of installation and operation of each type and another important deciding factor, the price. Hopefully this article has succeeded in putting things into perspective and enabling an easy decision-making.

There are many factors to consider before choosing the best alarm systems for your home. Price, number of features, ease of installation, operation, and how the system is wired all play a part in the decision. In general, wireless security systems are easier to install, but may suffer from poor signal quality. Wired systems are more costly to install, but results in a well-hidden and reliable system. With either system, the video may be viewed in real time, recorded for future use, or sent offsite to specialized alarm companies to receive and respond to intrusion notifications.
