Numbness in Fingers Can Signal Carpal Tunnel or Repetitive Stress Injury
Are you having a problem with numbness in your fingers? If you are there are a couple of possible explanations for this. The two most common problems that create numbness in the fingers are carpal tunnel syndrome and repetitive stress injury. These two problems can both create this finger numbness, as well as other possible symptoms. With this in mind, here is a better look at these two issues and a bit more about them to help you determine which one you are probably dealing with.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome One problem that can cause numbness in the fingers is known as carpal tunnel syndrome. The carpal tunnel goes right through your wrist on the side of the palm and it works to keep the median nerve protected, as well as various tendons. When too much pressure is on this nerve, it can lead to problems, such as numbness.
Other Possible Symptoms: Although numbness in the fingers is the main symptom of carpal tunnel syndrome, there are other symptoms as well. Tingling that is felt in the hands and fingers are another symptom. Pain in the wrist, fingers and up into the arm is another possible symptom. Carpal tunnel can also cause weakness in the hand and arm and it can even lead to problems with lifting and carrying objects.
The Risks: There are several different risk factors that could make you more likely to develop carpal tunnel syndrome. Certain occupations are more likely to cause the syndrome. These occupations include any that involve using the wrist in motions that are repetitive. These occupations include working with computers, assembly line workers, and typists. These occupations can put you at a higher risk for developing the syndrome. There are even physical reasons for developing the syndrome, such as pregnancy, hypothyriodism, diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis.
Repetitive Stress Injury: Another problem which may lead to numbness of the fingers is repetitive stress injury. Such injuries essentially are those which may occur if you perform particular motions time and time again. In this situation, it includes repetitively using the hands and the wrists. Some injuries which may be included are bursitis, tendonitis, epicondylitis, tenosynovitis, and trigger finger.
Causes: Why does repetitive stress injury actually occur? Well it often occurs due to too many repetitions of a certain motion. Another reason for this type of injury is unnatural wrist movements. Muscle fatigue, over exertion and poor posture are other possible reasons for repetitive stress injuries.
-Signs and Symptoms - Numbness of the fingers is only one of the symptoms that occurs with repetitive stress injuries. Pain in the fingers and hands can be a symptom and tingling can also come along with this problem. Other symptoms include loss of strength, limited flexibility, redness, and even swelling.
Both of these problems, carpal tunnel and repetitive stress injury, can lead to numbness in your fingers. You may need to see your doctor so he can decide which problem you are dealing with and to prescribe the proper treatment.
