Are you thinking about going back to school?

by Neil McFarland

Are you thinking about making some changes in your life? You should think about going back to school! Now is the best time to do so with the economy we are experiencing. There is no better time to learn new skills and land a better job.

So, where do you begin? There are few things you'll have to do when going back to school. Your first assignment is to decide what subject you want to learn! Perhaps you've always felt the calling to help people, and you want to become a nurse. Or perhaps teaching is more your style. Whatever career you've always dreamed of having, you need to choose the best school for you and your chosen field.

The next step in going back to school is applying to the school of your choice. Depending on your needs, this might be either a four-year university, or a community college. Obviously, your best choice might be to start off at a community college, and then transfer to a university which is what I did. Also keep in mind for-profit universities like DeVry and Kaplan. For-profit universities like these are usually a great choice for working adults.

Now you have applied and been accepted! Congratulations! Well, now is the time to start looking into how you're going to be paying for this. This can be quite expensive, so it's a good thing there are plenty of grants, scholarships, and student loans to help you out. It's a good thing scholarships aren't just for the kids - in fact, did you know that there are over 230 scholarships available that have a minimum age restriction of 25? And that's to say nothing of the many government sponsored grants available to adults. There's always the choice of student loans for those who were not awarded any scholarships or grants, and with interest rates as low as 2.75%, this might not be as bad a choice as some make it out to be.

OK, we've been accepted, and we've covered the costs - what do we do next? Now it's time for classes to start! Let's not get carried away though - this is going to be quite a culture shock in a way, so it's best to ease into it as you get used to the changes. I would recommend starting off with just two or possibly three classes during your first semester. This is the way I did it, and it was helpful to get acclimated to my new schedule.

And now you're going back to school! Congrats on taking this step to improving your life! There's yet more information that will help you with school. From note-taking tips, to information about tests you can take to help you figure out your major, I would recommend you head over to www.goingbacktoschool.org to learn more about how you can best succeed during college.
